MoU BETWEEN INDIA AND AUSTRALIA TO EASE VISA FOR EDUCATION, TRAVEL & TOURISM

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tourism between India and Australia augurs a fresh beginning for tourism relations between the two countries. The MoU was signed by India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distributions Piyush Goyal and Australia’s Minister of Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan MP on 11th February 2022 in New Delhi.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE TOURISM INDUSTRY

The MoU aims to enhance the exchange of tourism-related information and data and cooperation between tourism stakeholders such as hotels and tour operators of both countries. Further, it will facilitate exchange between education and training providers in tourism and hospitality. Other aspects of the MoU include:

  • Investment in the hospitality and tourism sectors
  • High-quality, safe, and sustainable tourism development
  • Visits of tour operators, media and opinion makers
  • Interest in sporting, cultural, and artistic events
  • Enhanced tourism engagement
  • Opportunities for traveller education on prevailing laws

IMPACT ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The MoU also brings good news for international students planning to pursue higher education in Australia. According to the Australian minister, the tourism MoU will strengthen the education relationships between the two countries.  Both countries plan to implement mutual recognition of qualifications, which will enable students to study in both countries. It is a positive development amid the ongoing pandemic as international students struggle to fulfil their study abroad dreams during travel restrictions and border closures.

GOOD TIMES AHEAD FOR BOTH COUNTRIES

Mr. Tehan stated that the agreement will be a significant milestone in the mutual relationship between India and Australia. They can expect robust economic ties in the future. Australia is among the top tourism-generating markets for India, and the MoU will lead to an increase in tourists’ arrival from the country. The two ministers also announced an upcoming Interim Trade Agreement between the countries. The Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) will lead to substantial economic opportunities and stronger bilateral relationships. The interim agreement will cover key areas such as goods, services, customs procedures, sanitary measures, and Legal and Institutional issues.

Australia will open for travellers from all over the world on 21st February, and Minister Dan Tehan invited Indians to visit his country.
