TANZANIA TO HAVE THE FIRST IIT CAMPUS OUTSIDE INDIA

The first IIT campus overseas is all set to get off the mark, with Tanzania being the destination for the landmark initiative. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Zanzibar will get a campus of IIT Madras, with its programmes expected to launch in 2023.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a campus of IIT Madras at the location has already been signed during the official visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Tanzania. The MoU aims to provide the framework for the countries to set up the proposed campus and launch programmes according to the plan.

IIT Madras, the Indian education ministry, and Zanzibar’s Ministry of Education and vocational training signed the MoU to seal the deal. The upcoming campus marks a new milestone for the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

It also reinforces India’s vision of building people-to-people ties across regions like Africa and the Global South. As a part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, top Indian universities will be encouraged to establish their campuses in other countries.
