NEW YOUTH MOBILITY SCHEME – YOUNG INDIANS CAN NOW WORK IN THE UK FOR TWO YEARS

UK-INDIA TO FOSTER CLOSER RELATIONS POST-BREXIT: YOUNG INDIANS CAN LIVE & WORK IN BRITAIN FOR TWO YEARS

After the cancellation of his official tour to India, Boris Johnson had a virtual meeting with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. The two leaders pledged to work towards building stronger relationships between their countries. The British Government is aspiring to make a full free-trade deal with India first before the EU does.

As a part of the initiative, young Indians will be allowed to live and work in the country for up to two years even without a job offer. The announcement came as the first significant liberalisation move for the immigration system of the UK post-Brexit. The country will have a new mobility scheme for the youth to let as many as 3,000 Indian graduates within the age group 18-30 years land in the UK each year. They can seek work here and stay up to 24 months. The same will be applicable for young Britons who want to live and work in India.

Right now, the youth mobility programme applies only to wealthy countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. After the latest collaboration with India, the initiative will enable young people from both countries to live, work and experience the cultures of each other. It will also help the UK to remove illegitimate immigrants abusing the system. After closing free movement with the EU post-Brexit, the UK Government aims to reduce the migration numbers. It also wants to bring in more skilled workers through a points-based system that keeps well-educated and higher-paid professionals on top priority.

In their meeting, the Prime Ministers also had a word on a joint 2030 roadmap that will entail doubling the volume of bilateral trade between the countries, collaborating on health security, and combating climate change. Further, the roadmap includes the strategy to counter the rise of China through joint operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

The British Prime Minister highlighted the connection between the UK and India with a special mention for the support extended by the British people to Indians during the terrible situation the country is facing. He stated that the connection will get stronger over the next decade, as both countries work together to make life better for their people and tackle global problems.
