SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

The CDT will support postgraduate students to develop advanced knowledge and skills in compound semiconductor technology as well as developing research and professional skills and an understanding of the industry. This PhD degree programme is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing. The centre is led by Cardiff University working closely with partner universities, Manchester and Sheffield, and University College London (UCL).

Number of Awards: 12 to 13 studentships will be available per annum

Duration of the Scholarship: This is a fully funded scholarship for a 4-year duration during PhD degree.

Benefits:

A place in the CDT is fully funded for the 4-year duration and includes full university fees and a stipend for eligible students. This fully funded scholarship provides

  1. Full Home tuition fees
  2. Doctoral stipend matching UKRI National Minimum plus £750 per annum enhancement
  3.  Additional funding is available over the course of the programme and will cover costs such as research consumables, training, conferences and travel.

Eligibility Requirements:

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship. Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria

  1. Applicants should have or be expecting to graduate with a good degree in physics, electronic or electrical engineering (first or 2:1)
  2. Applicants should have a genuine interest in compound semiconductors and enthusiasm for the group approach.
  3. Applicants with a lower second class degree (2:2) in these subjects may be considered if they have a good result at Masters level study or significant relevant work experience
  4. Applicants with related physical science degrees on an individual basis will also be considered.
  5. Studentships are available for Home and International students.

Interested students who plan to study for a postdoctoral degree in UK and looking for a fully funded scholarship, can apply for this scholarship.

  1. Applications must be made via the Cardiff University Coursefinder Page.
  2. Use the “Apply Now” in the page and select ‘Doctor of Philosophy’, ‘Full time’ and your preferred start date (October 2021).
  3. Login to the university page and fill in the application and submit the required documents.
  4. The application will state that you are applying for a 4 year PhD in the School of Physics and Astronomy, because this is the ‘home’ School for the CDT Programme.
  5. A research proposal is NOT required for this PhD Programme.  Instead, please state that you are applying for the CDT PhD in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing and your preferred MSc route: Physics or Electronics.

  1. CV detailing your education and relevant work experience
  2. Personal statement telling us your reasons for wanting to study Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing as a 4-year PhD programme and why you are suitable for the CDT (approximately 500 words).
  3. Two recent references, dated within the last six months, that address your capability for PhD study, at least one of which should be an academic referee.
