UK TO RECRUIT INDIAN TEACHERS- WHOPPING PAY FOR MATH, SCIENCE & LANGUAGES PROFESSIONALS

According to a report by a local media outlet, the UK is all set to recruit Indian math, science, and language teachers as they are in high demand in the country. The government plans to pick hundreds of teachers under the International Relocation Payments (IRP) scheme. It is an overseas initiative paying these professionals over Rs 10 lakh for relocation to England to fill classroom vacancies.

Besides India, the UK is targeting Nigeria and many other countries for math, science, and language teachers. It also plans to widen the recruitment schemes to more countries and subjects down the line. The Department for Education (DfE) stated that the trial offering includes 400 of the best teachers from across the globe and gives them an opportunity to teach in UK schools. The aim is to provide an excellent teacher for every child.

MORE ABOUT INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION PAYMENTS (IRP)

The International Relocation Payments (IRP) is a pilot programme offering jobs to overseas teachers. The scheme is applicable for the academic year 2023 to 2024 and covers costs of relocation such as visa costs, immigration health surcharge, and other expenses for eligible professionals.

ELIGIBILITY FOR IRP TEACHER RECRUITMENT IN UK

To be eligible for the IRP scheme, teachers must fulfil the following requirements:

  • A degree with recognised teacher-training qualifications
  • At least a year’s experience
  • Fluency in English at the undergraduate level

Qualifying professionals are eligible for work visas in Britain if they also have a job offer and earn a minimum salary of over ₹27 lakhs (GBP 27,000) per annum according to their role. The recruitment initiative includes qualified math, science, and language teachers from India, Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

APPLICATION DETAILS

International teachers looking to explore the scheme can check the UK government’s official teaching website for details. The application process starts on 1st September 2023 and will close on 31st October 2023. Applicants can mail at IRP.ExpressInterest@education.gov.uk to show their interest in the scheme. They will have to fill up their details in a form. Eligible candidates will receive the funds around the end of their first school term of employment.

WHAT NEXT

Under the IRP scheme, the UK government expects to bring in 300 and 400 teachers during the academic session of 2023-24. If the scheme is successful, it may be extended to more subjects. While the move looks good for overseas teaching professionals, it comes amid a raging debate over the record net migration figures in the country released earlier this week. The government has also implemented plans to curb family dependants on student visas as only Ph.D. level graduates are now allowed to bring them along.
