SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

Description: The Newton International Fellowships scheme is run jointly by the British Academy and The Royal Society. These fellowships are awarded to non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK. This fellowship scheme aims to select the very best early-career postdoctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at UK research institutions for two years.

Duration of the Scholarship: Two years

Subject of Study: Research must be within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. For a full list, please see the breakdown of subject groups and areas supported by the Royal Society.

Benefits:

The Newton International Fellowship Funding will consist of:

  1.  £24,000 per annum for subsistence costs (tax exempt)
  2. up to £8,000 per annum for consumables
  3. a one-off payment of up to £3,500 for relocation expenses in year one only
  4. contribution towards the cost of dependents’ (partner and children only) visas required to relocate to the UK
  5. a contribution will also be made to enable the UK host institution to host a Fellowship; this will be equal to 50% of the award (excluding the additional funding for dependents’ visas).
  6. Successful applicants may also be eligible to receive annual funding following the completion of their fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based researchers.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to apply for the Newton International Fellowships offered to conduct research in UK, applicants must

  1. have a PhD, or will have a PhD by the time the funding starts
  2. have no more than 7 years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry)
  3. be working outside the UK
  4. not hold UK citizenship
  5. be competent in oral and written English
  6. have a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research proposal agreed with a UK host scientist

How to apply:

To apply to the Newtons International Fellowship, follow the below mentioned process afeter checking the eligibility requirements.

  1. Fill in the online scholarship application form via Flexi-Grant®.
  2. Fill in all the sections in the online application form.
  3. All applicants should submit an ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) identifier if they have one before their application is submitted. This is a mandatory requirement at the application submission stage only. You can register for an ORCID identifier via https://orcid.org/register.
  4. Applications for the humanities and social sciences should be made to the British Academy.
  5. Applications for the natural and physical sciences should be submitted through the Royal Society’s grants management system Flexi-Grant®.
  6. Submit your applications before 16 June 2021.

Assessment process

All applications to the Newton International Fellowships are reviewed and assessed by two members of the selection panel who have the most appropriate scientific expertise.
