MORE THAN $2.1 MILLION RAISED BY BROOKLYN COLLEGE TO HELP PANDEMIC-STRICKEN STUDENTS

Brooklyn College made a commendable effort by raising approximately $2.1 million to help the pandemic-stricken as donations students reach their academic goals. The funds have been raised through various channels, such as donations and financial aid from supporters, throughout the last year. The Brooklyn College Foundation played a significant role in this philanthropic initiative. 

SURVEY INDICATES OPTIMISM ON RETURN OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN THE US

According to the latest COVID-19 Snapshot Survey released last week, the higher education institutions in the US are confident about the recovery of international enrolment and study abroad in near future. They are gearing up to bring students back to campus, as 86% of them have in-person study plans in fall 2021, while none of them intend to get back to the virtual-only mode.

MCDONALD’S SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME PROVIDES $100,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR EL PASO STUDENTS

The McDonald’s El Paso Scholarship programme has given away $100,000 as scholarships to 20 El Paso students for the third consecutive year. The funding will cover them for a full year of tuition. The programme is run by El Paso Owner, Richard Castro, in collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and El Paso Community College (EPCC).

After the Chinese students had a hard time in the US during the Trump administration and specifically in the pandemic year, things may look up for them. The latest US survey indicates that most universities in the country plan to get back to in-person teaching this fall. The picture looks bright as almost half of the institutions in the survey reported an impressive increase in the number of applications from international students for the 2021/22 academic year. The numbers are almost double the last year’s applications.

NEW RESIDENCY STREAMS FOR HONG KONGERS BY CANADA

Canada has recently launched two additional streams that offer a route to Canadian permanent residency for all eligible Hong Kong residents in the country. These include recent graduates and workers already in Canada. Applicants must already be in the country and must also have a valid temporary resident status when they apply and when the PR is granted.

It will cover the cost of COVID-19 testing, transportation costs from the airport, and free on-campus accommodation for quarantining.

£3.4 MN ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO EXPAND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD IN SCHOOLS

More students from the deprived areas of England can access the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which has recently received a funding boost of a massive £3.4 million from the Government. It will offer more volunteering and extra-curricular learning opportunities for youngsters. The award will now reach up to 291 more schools, which are not delivering it currently.

UNG FACULTY TO RUN STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMMES

The faculty at the University of North Georgia (UNG) is all set to run study abroad programmes for students. The initiative is being supported by the Center for Global Engagement (CGE), which has already sponsored two academies in the spring to assist the university’s faculty in developing and executing education abroad and study away programmes.

BENGALURU- VACCINATION FOR 1,470 STUDENTS AND OTHERS WHO WANT TO GO ABROAD

A special vaccination drive was organised by the government at Bengaluru Central University (BCU) between June 1 and 11. It aimed to assist students enrolled in foreign universities and people travelling overseas for work. A total of 1,470 were vaccinated, with an average of 133 people getting the shot every day. There is a demand for extending the drive as many people are still waiting for visa processing.

MACHINE LEARNING SUMMER SCHOOL BY AMAZON INDIA

Amazon India is all set to launch the ML Summer School to offer an integrated learning experience to Indian students aspiring to ramp up their applied machine learning skills. The programme will include a batch of students from select Indian tech campuses. They will engage through virtual classrooms and interactive Q&A sessions with top Amazon scientists.


PETITION BY STUDENTS IN PROTECT OF UGC’S BLENDED MODE OF EDUCATION

Many students are not happy with the blended mode of education implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC). An online petition, which has already been signed by more than a thousand students, will be submitted to Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India. The petition is being run by the All India Forum to Save Public Education.

GRADES RATHER THAN MARKS FOR CLASS XII CBSE STUDENTS

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) may award grades rather than marks to Class XII students this year, after the exams being scrapped due to the second wave of the pandemic in India. They stated that central universities are likely to a computer-based common entrance test for undergraduate admissions. The exams will be held in July or August at centres across the country.

STUDY PERMIT GETS DICEY FOR THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN PUNJAB AFTER 10 CANADIAN COLLEGES FACE ADMISSION SCRUTINY

The future of thousands of students in Punjab hangs in uncertainty as many Canadian Colleges face admission scrutiny. Consultants state that these colleges, ten in number, have classes only two or three days a week. Students can work during the rest of the days. But regulations have been tightened on these institutions, making things harder for the students who have applied for admission.  

INDIAN STUDENTS ENROLLED IN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES LOOK FOR EARLY REDRESSAL ON TRAVEL BAN

A large number of Indian students already enrolled in international universities are stuck back home due to stringent travel bans. However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has come to the rescue. It has directed such students to provide their details to the Overseas Indian Affairs (OIA)-II division. Right now, the key concern is an early redressal on travel bans.

RIL LOOKS UP TO EDTECH AS THE NEXT FRONTIER

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is all set to make inroads into the ed-tech sector in the coming time. It is already at work, building a suite of learning solutions for the vast ed-tech market in the country.
