COLLABORATION BETWEEN WHARTON/DELOITTE TO CURB BARRIERS TO INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP

The Wharton School and Deloitte, the leading professional services company, are coming together for a research initiative to encourage equity, diversity, and inclusion in the business community. This initiative will cover the experiences of managers from minority groups like Black and Latino/Hispanic American to those from the majority groups and use the key learnings to realign business school curriculum and training tools to curb barriers to inclusive leadership.

NEW GALAXY CLUSTERS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT DISCOVERED BY MIT ASTRONOMERS

MIT astronomers have recently discovered new galactic clusters that were overlooked in previous studies. Their results indicate that nearly 1 percent of galaxy clusters appear atypical.  It makes them easy to misidentify as a single galaxy. Researchers must consider these latest findings, or they may end up with an incomplete picture of the universe even with the latest cluster-hunting telescopes.

DAVIDSON-DAVIE COMMUNITY COLLEGE HONOURED WITH AWARD FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Davidson-Davie Community College is among the five colleges honoured with the Sen. Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalisation in 2021. The award comes as recognition for excellence in integrating international education across all facets of the experience it delivers to the students. Other colleges and universities that have received the award are Santa Fe College, Lehigh University, Florida International University, and The University of Texas at Austin.

MORE INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR PRESTIGIOUS US INSTITUTIONS IN 2020/21

According to a recent report, the prestigious US institutions that already have global brand recognition may have witnessed an upsurge in applications received in the 2020/21 cycle. However, the lesser-known institutions will have to gear up for a more competitive international market. Even as the overall applications to institutions in the country decreased in 2020/21, the number of applications per student has increased.

FEWER INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR CANADA’S SCHOOLS DUE TO COVID-19 TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

The number of international students at Canada’s colleges has witnessed a significant decline of 20-30% in the academic year 2020-21, as compared to 2019-20. Many study abroad aspirants have decided to postpone or cancel their plans since Ottawa decided to curb entry options to Canada to only four airports. Further, the mandatory hotel quarantine requirement for international travellers has given them a bigger reason to stay away.

Scotland and theGerman federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate are coming together for stronger higher education collaboration with the aim to expand research cooperation, foster education and teacher training, facilitate language learning and intercultural dialogue, and promote exchange between schoolchildren, students, trainees, artists,  and academicians.

PROMISES OF A ‘TOTALLY OPEN CAMPUS’ BY THE UK UNIVERSITIES TO WOO NEW STUDENTS

With the peak season for university offers starting, some institutions are trying to woo prospective students by promising a totally open campus or at least a normal student life in the term ahead. But prospective students expect a more transparent approach regarding the possibility of disruption to college classes and social lives amid the pandemic. The move comes when universities are facing fierce competition to pull new students this summer.

EMPLOYABLE YOU GRADUATE TOOLKIT LAUNCHED BY IRISH UNIVERSITIES

The Irish Universities Association has launched the Employable You graduate toolkit as an initiative to support international students in managing their careers successfully. The toolkit will enhance the support they already get from the University Careers Offices. Further, it aims to identify issues faced by international students while looking for work opportunities, give a better understanding of the job market, and offer advice on work-integrated learning, internships, casual work and volunteering, and overseas experience.

VALEO TO INVEST £750M INTO UK STUDENT HOUSING

Valeo Groupe Europe plans to make an investment of a whopping £600-750m in the accommodation sector for UK students over the next four years. Valeo entered the student arena in 2018 with the acquisition of UK operator Urban Student Life, an organisation managing assets with 3,000 beds for students in the country.

URAL FEDERAL UNIVERSITY’S GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT MAKES IT INTO 1% OF THE WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION ELITE

The International Economy and International Business educational programme of the Ural Federal University’s Graduate School of Economics and Management has found a place in the 1% of the world-class education elite. The honour came after an audit by European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The accreditation confirms the programme’s compliance for preparing graduates for a global career.

UTMN: RUSSIA SIMPLIFIES DIPLOMA RECOGNITION

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has recently signed a decree to regulate the procedure for the selection of foreign educational and scientific organisations whose diplomas need not be confirmed in the country. There will be a simplified student mobility protocol for increasing interest in higher education in Russia, facilitating the exchange of experience, helping organise conferences and short-term courses, and promoting technical, scientific, and cultural events.


ASIA

NINE UAE UNIVERSITIES PLANNING TO BOOST DIGITAL PROGRAMMES

Nine renowned universities in the United Arab Emirates are aspiring to implement a comprehensive action plan for developing accredited online university programmes that aim to boost the digital initiative in the higher education sector. The announcement came in the wake of the formation of the University Consortium for Quality Online Learning by the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education and the Ministry of Education.

SCHOLARS PROGRAM FOR EUROPE ANNOUNCED BY TAIWAN

As a part of its initiative to strengthen international ties in the education segment, Taiwan announced the Taiwan-Europe Linking Scholarship programme to foster closer academic cooperation with European countries. The programme will provide a subsidy for domestic universities to attract students from Europe to study in Taiwan and encourage educational cooperation with European countries.

 ‘SPECIAL ADMISSION ROUND’ BY VIETNAM’S VINUNIVERSITY

In an effort to attract elite students and create a world-class university, VinUniversity in Vietnam has announced a ‘Special Admission Round’ for bright international students and domestic students with international recognition such as medals at national or international science Olympiads or recognition by prestigious universities. These students will get an exemption from the initial application process and move directly to the interview round.

SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY CONSIDERING CAMPUS IN HONG KONG

In a recent statement, Li Qingquan, president of the prestigious Shenzhen University said that the institution may soon open a campus in Hong Kong. The university is the closest university in China to Hong Kong and offers some unique advantages, which it wants to provide to students in Hong Kong as well.


NEW ZEALAND

VISA PROCESSING FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ON HOLD IN NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand has closed its borders to most non-residents, with an exception for those who can show a critical purpose. Offshore temporary entry visa applications have been suspended since August 2020. International students with open visa applications are advised not to spend time or effort anymore on their applications, because a processing freeze is still in place. Moreover, there is no set timeframe for easing border restrictions.
