NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN ASSAM IN 2022-23

According to the Assam government, the state will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) in the forthcoming years. It will start with 75 per cent implementation in 2022 and reach the 100 per cent target by 2023. Colleges in the state will not have Class 11 and 12 anymore under the new education policy. School education will continue up to class 12.

ALMOST 40 PER CENT OF INDIAN STUDENTS OPTING FOR PRIVATE TUITIONS- ASER REPORT

According to the latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), as many as 40 percent of students in India are taking private tuition. While government school enrolment between 2018 and 2021 has increased significantly, it is accompanied by a growing inclination toward private coaching in the country.

RISE IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOL ENROLMENTS AND DIP IN PRIVATE ONES IN COVID YEAR

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) stated that the government schools in India have seen an increase in enrolments, while private schools have been on the losing side. Additionally, school education in rural India is making a comeback with increased enrolment in government schools, better access to digital devices, and the availability of textbooks.

SUPREME COURT REFUSES TO DIRECT CBSE AND CISCE TO PROVIDE THE HYBRID BOARD EXAM OPTION

The Supreme Court has decided that CBSE and CISCE will not provide the hybrid mode option for the board exams of class 10 and class 12. The decision came after a petition was filed demanding the option. The exams for both classes will continue offline as they do not want to disrupt the current process.

CAREER CERTIFICATES BY GOOGLE TO BOOST DIGITAL SKILLS OF JOBSEEKERS 

Google announced new features for  Google Search and Google Pay at Google for India 2022 virtual event. Additionally, the search giant launched 100,000 scholarships for Google Career Certificates at the event. The initiative involves collaboration with NASSCOM Foundation, SafeEducate, and Tata STRIVE. These organisations will pick underserved learners for free enrollment to a preferred Google Career Certificate programme.

INDIAN WOMEN LOOKING FORWARD TO ACQUIRE NEW SKILLS FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT

A recent survey found that most women in India wanted to acquire fresh skills for career advancement. Almost 90 per cent of the respondents stated that they look forward to picking skills that will help them do better at their current job or land a better job. They also want to become more employable with additional skills and abilities.

73 PER CENT OF YOUNG INDIANS BELIEVE THAT EDUCATION HAS GOT BETTER OVER THE PAST GENERATION

The Landmark Intergenerational Survey by UNICEF and Gallup spanning 21 countries, including India, showed that 73 per cent of young Indian respondents believe that the country has a better quality of education now as compared to the past. These respondents fall between the 15 – 24 years age group.

UK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SKIP PURCHASING NECESSARY LEARNING MATERIALS

Research by BibliU stated that 70 per cent of UK university students have opted not to purchase necessary textbooks and learning materials. The study found that 35 per cent of the students said that they could not afford their textbooks. Further, 32% skipped them only because they thought them to be a waste of money.

BUSINESS SCHOOLS  GET INCREASING APPLICATIONS FROM INTERNATIONAL MBA CANDIDATES

The latest Application Trends Survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) stated that business schools have witnessed a steady surge in applications. Much of the growth is from international MBA applicants, with the total volume rising by 4.1% this year. Additionally, 44% of MBA programmes experienced a growth in international applications.

COMPETITION FOR GRADUATE JOBS IN THE UK REACHING A RECORD HIGH

A new student survey in the UK states that competition for graduate jobs in the country has surged to a record high this year. The development came in the wake of soaring applications and an absence of recruitment rebound. The graduate jobs market witnessed a growth of 9% in the last year, but it is far from pre-pandemic levels.

CHINA SCHOLARSHIP AGREEMENT SIGNED BY SURREY UNIVERSITY

The University of Surrey has collaborated with the China Scholarship Council for a new education partnership that aims to provide a joint scholarship. The agreement will initially provide ten Ph.D. students from China with an opportunity to study at the British institution. The initiative will run through the joint CSC-Surrey Scholarship.

AUSTRALIA TO REOPEN BORDERS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN DECEMBER

Australia is gearing up to reopen for international students after remaining close for more than 600 days amid the pandemic. To date, the Australian government has given approval to International Student Arrival Plans of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. The country expects to welcome them back by the end of the year.

ONLINE STUDIES NOT THE BEST BET FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIA

Although Australia plans to bring back international students by the end of the year, student leaders believe that more can be done. The stance of the government has affected the psyche of international students coming to the country. The number of study abroad aspirants applying to Australian universities  dipped during the closures. At the same time, the online mode isn’t the best option for them.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA SET TO OPEN TO STUDENTS AND TRAVELLERS IN EARLY 2022

South Australia is predicted to lift international travel restrictions in early 2022 when at least 90% of its population over 12 years of age will have received both doses of vaccination. The state will allow all fully-vaccinated domestic and international students and travellers to return around January or February in the next year.

IDP REPORTS A GOOD 2021 DESPITE A 10% DIP IN GROWTH

The annual financial report of IDP Education states that the financial performance of the company fell by 9.9% in 2021. The total revenue for the year was AUD$528.7 million. The first half of the year was unfortunate, with a revenue loss of 29%, compared to the previous year’s figures. But the second half witnessed an impressive uptick of 24.8%.

NEW FIRST-TIME INTERNATIONAL ENROLMENTS WITNESS 68% RISE ACROSS US FOR 2021/22

According to the Open Doors 2021 report, the number of international students in US institutions has witnessed a rebound after a pandemic-induced drop.  Higher education institutions in the country reported an increase of 68% in the number of new foreign students enrolling for the first time in 2021/22. It is an impressive surge, considering the 46% dip reported in Fall 2020. 

DECREASE IN ENROLMENT CAUSED A $12.1BN LOSS TO THE US ECONOMY

The US economy has sustained a loss of $12.1 billion over two years due to the decline in the number of international students coming to the country. Statistics indicate that international students at US universities and colleges contributed $28.4 billion to the economy during 2020/21. It marks a massive decline of 27% from the previous academic year.
