64% OF STUDENTS FROM INDIA PLAN TO STUDY ABROAD IN THE US, CANADA REGARDLESS OF THE PANDEMIC

The COVID crisis may have deferred the study abroad plans of Indian students, but they aren’t giving up on their dreams. Nearly 64 per cent of Indian students still plan to pursue international education at destinations like the US and Canada. The Mentor Conference 2021 Polls reveal these encouraging figures. The survey also found that 79 per cent of the students consider international education a key factor in increasing their employability.

ARE FOREIGN DEGREES LOSING THEIR CHARM FOR INDIAN STUDENTS?

According to a recent study, a growing number of Indian students are now considering higher studies back home over getting it from an international destination. The Student Quest Survey covered over 3,000 students of classes 11 and 12. About 68 per cent of the participants stated that they would prefer to pursue higher education in their home country. Nearly 25 per cent of students plan to go abroad for higher education this year.

TRANSFORMATIONAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME FOR FEMALE STUDENTS FROM CLASS 8-12

Wonder Girls will soon launch a transformational fellowship programme for female students from classes 8-12. The programme aspires to develop and nurture ambitious young girls into courageous and confident leaders. The first batch will accept 50 fellows from these classes. The programme involves learning directly from skilled leaders and high-quality peer groups, boosting leadership potential through a curated project, and access to internships.

FINAL-YEAR ENGINEERING CURRICULUM IN TAMIL NADU WILL INCLUDE FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The Higher Education Minister of Tamil Nadu announced that the final-year engineering students of government and aided engineering colleges in the state will study foreign languages as a part of their curriculum. It will enhance opportunities for research and employment overseas. The languages to be taught include German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian.

SOMMET ACQUIRES STAKE IN INDIAN SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY

Sommet Education, a leading Swiss hospitality education provider, has announced the acquisition of a strategic stake in the Indian School of Hospitality. The school is located in Gurgaon and was launched in 2018. It offers degree, diploma, and certificate programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

CLASSES STARTING IN THE US BUT NO VISAS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students looking ahead to study in American universities are in a tight spot as the embassies are running with fewer workers during the pandemic. The country needs international students to appear for an in-person interview to get a visa. But things are not working in their favor as they cannot appear for the same. Many students will be unable to travel to the US and start the school year.

CHINESE GRADUATE VISA BAN BY THE US HAS “OVERLY BROAD CRITERIA”

A recent report by The National Foundation for American Policy stated that a Trump administration proclamation banning thousands of Chinese students from entering the US has overly broad criteria. Additionally, it fails to evaluate students on the basis of individual risk factors. The proclamation bars researchers and graduates linked to China’s ‘military-civil fusion strategy’ from entering the country.

GLOBAL EDUCATION PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN THE CLIMATE CHANGE CRISIS

The IPCC report has led the global education community to think of ways to make the sector more sustainable. The report draws attention towards global climatic crises such as extreme heatwaves, droughts, and flooding. As things are likely to get worse in the coming decades, the higher education industry must address issues such as mobility to do its bit for fighting climate change. 

ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED BY BYU

US law school BYU Law is all set to launch an initiative to give students the opportunity to gain insight into the Middle East and its international conflict. The Jerusalem initiative will be started in collaboration with the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. It will make students aware of the most crucial domestic and international law issues around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

CANADA AND THE UK AHEAD OF THE US AS POPULAR STUDY ABROAD DESTINATIONS

Canada and the UK are now ahead of the US to attain the status of the most popular study abroad destination in the world. Surveys by educations.com indicated that the development pushed the US to third place in the ranking during the last two years.  These surveys also show that the popularity of these countries has primarily soared due to a drop in the popularity of HEIs in the US.

AFGHAN CHEVENING SCHOLARS ARRIVE IN UK TO START STUDIES

Afghan Chevening students and scholars have started to arrive in the UK with the evacuation efforts from the Kabul international airport approaching their deadline. Earlier, campaigners had urged the UK government to reconsider its plans after the news of the Chevening scholars’ offers being deferred until 2022/23.

METROPOLITAN COLLEGE GREECE TO HAVE MORE COURSES FROM OXFORD BROOKES

As a part of its collaboration with Metropolitan College Greece, Oxford Brookes University will provide five more courses from the college campuses in Athens and Thessaloniki. The partnership started in 2019 with six undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as allied health, hospitality, accounting, and technology. The upcoming programmes will include entrepreneurship, architecture, creative writing, medical genetics, and real estate investment.

EXPANSION IN PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF KENT AND FUTURELEARN WITH MICRO-CREDENTIALS

The University of Kent is all set to extend its collaboration with FutureLearn, the leading social learning platform. It will now include new credit-bearing micro-credentials, along with the existing programmes they offer. The university launched its first course with FutureLearn back in 2016. Since then, it has started several more and generated over 150,000 enrolments.

10 YEAR PARTNERSHIP EXTENSION BETWEEN ROYAL HOLLOWAY AND STUDY GROUP

London’s Royal Holloway University and Study Group have renewed their partnership for a 10-year period. The partnership was first set up in 2011 to offer various pathway programmes allowing international students access degree-level education at the university. The success of the ongoing collaboration has driven the institutions to extend their partnership for another decade.

AUSTRALIA’S UNIVERSITY SECTOR STILL HAS A LONG ROAD AHEAD

Australia’s university sector seems to have a long road ahead and may take years to rebound from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Alan Tudge, the minister of education, stated that the impact of the current slowdown in the sector will continue even if international students come back in 2022.
