UK HOLDS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AFGHAN STUDENTS

Students from Afghanistan offered scholarships by the UK government got a rude shock when told that they will no longer get their places to study here. Chevening Scholarships help outstanding international students to study master’s programmes in the UK. However, Afghan students will not get them as the British Embassy cannot finish preparations in time due to the volatile situation in the country.

DENTAL STUDENTS IN ENGLAND GET A £10,000 OFFER TO SWITCH UNIVERSITY

Students who have secured admission to an oversubscribed dentistry degree in England have a cash offer of £10,000 for transferring to another university where places are available. Like medicine, dental schools in the country are facing a spike in demand, with an unexpectedly large number of students achieving the high A-level grades required to secure a place in the courses.

LAUNCH OF FULBRIGHT STEPHEN LAWRENCE AWARD

The US-UK Fulbright Commission, in collaboration with the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Black Police Association, has launched the prestigious Fulbright-Stephen Lawrence Scholar Award in Policing. The award will enable a police officer or member of staff from the UK to conduct research in a three-month programme by three American Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

9% INCREASE IN NON-EU UCAS APPLICATIONS, EU DOWN 56%

UCAS reported a 9% increase in non-EU applications and a 56% decline in applicants from EU countries in 2021.  The 9% non-EU rise included a whopping increase of 33% from Malaysia, 33% from the US, and 40% from Nigeria. China and India, the two biggest markets for the UK, also saw modest increases this year.

Top UK universities are struggling to provide adequate accommodation for thousands of additional students who secured admissions in record numbers with high grades. With this development, the A-level graders would have to live far from the colleges of their choice. Some students are being offered shared rooms or halls in other cities, as institutions buy up extra private accommodation.

16 AND 17-YEAR-OLDS IN ENGLAND TO GET COVID JAB BY 23 AUGUST

The 16 and 17-year-olds in England will get their first COVID vaccine dose by 23 August. Alternatively, they can secure a chance to book a jab by this date. According to the health secretary, vaccines will provide some protection for teenagers before starting school or college next month. NHS England will launch a walk-in site finder to enable people to find their nearest vaccine centre.

BOARDING SCHOOL FEES TO HIKE BY TWICE THE INFLATION RATE

Top boarding schools in the UK are all set to bring an unprecedented hike in their fees. The cost of sending a child here could reach a whopping £45,000 for the first time. The figure is more than twice the inflation rate. Despite disrupted education in the last two years, parents will have to bear 6.5 per cent fee hike next month. Inflation rates are 2.4 per cent, making the fee hike exorbitant for parents.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY OFFERS RECORD PROPORTION PLACES TO STUDENTS FROM STATE SCHOOL

This year has witnessed a record proportion of students from state schools making it into the prestigious Cambridge University with A-level results. The university stated that these students were likely to hold 71-72 per cent of its intake in autumn, which is more than 70.6 per cent in the last year. Further, every student who matched the offer has been accepted.

MAJOR CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES MANDATE VACCINES

Several prominent Canadian universities have mandated vaccination for the students and staff to be on campus. These include Toronto, Queen’s, Ottawa, and Western universities. Additionally, IRCC has stated they will require vaccination proof to support the reopening of international travel to the country. The University of Ottawa has taken the lead to mandate vaccinations in the country.

CANADA TO OPEN NEW CONSULTANT REGULATOR

Canada will start a College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants to check immigration fraud and protect individuals seeking to immigrate to the country. The college will open on November 23 and become the official regulator of authorised consultants across Canada. It will make sure that consultants adhere to the statutory framework provided for regulating them.

DELHI SCHOOLS TO IMPART INTERNATIONAL LEVEL EDUCATION

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, stated that the city has emerged as a model of governance and will soon impart an international level education to the students. The statement came during the launch of the “Deshbhakti” curriculum in the city’s government schools. The initiative will start on September 27, while October 2 will mark the launch of yoga classes in the residential areas of the city.

INDIA STARTS A MOVEMENT FOR UPSKILLING YOUNG PEOPLE AMID THE PANDEMIC 

Millions of young people from urban and rural areas of India led commendable initiatives amid the second wave of the pandemic. These include vaccination drives, debunking myths around the pandemic, and providing peer counselling. Among these was the ‘Young Warrior’ movement launched in May 2021. The initiative achieved significant scale, implementing 6.6+ million actions.
