CHINESE STUDENTS PRIORITIZE UK AND SNUB US VISA OVER DELAYS

Constant delays in the US visa process have led to Chinese students opting for the UK as their higher education destination instead of following the American dream. The Chinese embassy in the UK has stated that an estimated 216,000 students from the country are pursuing studies in Britain. China is fast emerging as the biggest market for the international education segment in the UK.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS AND TUTORING IN CHINA TO BE REGULATED

Educators in China are concerned about the regulations around private tutoring and foreign education in the country. These regulations could ban foreign curricula for private schools, which is a big reason to worry. Restrictions may also be imposed on the nationalities of members of decision-making bodies of schools. Educators believe that government attempts to control this growing sector could have a far-reaching impact on businesses.

CHINESE FUNDING BEHIND €1.5BN UNIVERSITY IN HUNGARY

The Hungarian government is planning to construct China’s first European university campus in the country, with an investment of an estimated €1.5 billion. The majority of the funding will come from Chinese loans. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) will build the campus of the Fudan University in Budapest. It will source building materials and labour from the home country.

UK’S ESPORTS INVESTMENT IS MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Video gaming is no longer child’s play, but a big business in the UK. The esports club at the University of Kentucky in Lexington has recently created a big stir, as its members contributed to The Cornerstone building, which has an impressive gaming lounge, media rooms, and other amenities. It also houses a sports arena that can accommodate 100 people at a time.

ELT STUDENTS WILL GET €10 A NIGHT TO STUDY IN MALTA

A recent announcement by Malta’s minister for tourism Clayton Bartolo stated that international students travelling to the country this summer will get €10 for every night they spend here. The scheme starts on June 1, and only the students spending at least 15 nights here to study English at language schools will be eligible for the scheme. The amount per student will be capped at €300.

STUDY ABROAD GRANTS FOR 26 SCHOOLS IN THE US

The US government has recently awarded study abroad grants to 26 public and private colleges and universities across the country under the 2021 Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for US Students. Conferred by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, these grants aim to expand and develop study abroad programmes around the world. Five community colleges and nine minority-serving institutions are included in the winners’ list.

US VOTERS HAVE A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

According to the latest research from American Council on Education, US voters consider international students to have a positive impact on domestic students. They believe that the benefits of having them around are both intellectual and diplomatic. But at the same time, there is a concern about international students taking seats from their American counterparts.
