THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Rhodes scholarships offered for international students are the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship program in the world. The main aim of Rhodes Scholarships is to identify young intellectual minds from around the world and enable them to undertake full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. With its prestigious reputation, the Rhodes scholarship receives thousands of applications every year. The Rhodes Scholarship opens up opportunities for Scholars before, after and during their time in Oxford. The online applications for the scholarship open in early July every year and close in early October.

Rhodes Scholarship Benefits

The Rhodes scholarships offered to international students are not only a financial bursary for post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, but also a life-changing opportunity to young talented people who have the courage to act and make a difference for good in the world. Rhodes scholarship is a fully funded program and duration is for two years.

Tuition Fee:

  1.  Covers Oxford University (and College) fees as well as providing an annual stipend. 
  2.  The Rhodes Trust will cover the fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford. 
  3. For those Scholars who transition to a second course of study in Oxford, they will again receive assistance to cover the fee for visa renewal and further application for IHS.
  4. A number of research grants are also available to Rhodes Scholars, on application, which enables Scholars to, for example, attend international conferences or conduct additional fieldwork.
  5. Please refer to the detailed conditions of tenure for the Rhodes Scholarship to know in detail about the permitted combinations of degrees, and how many years of study are covered by the Scholarship.

Monthly Stipend:

  1. Recipients will receive a monthly stipend during the Rhodes scholarship period.
  2. For the 2020/21 academic year, the stipend will be £16,218 per annum from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation.

Travel Expense:

The Rhodes Trust will cover two economy class flights – to and from the UK – for the beginning and end of studies in Oxford.

Visa Expense:

 The Trust will cover the fee for a Tier 4 study visa required to study at the University of Oxford.

Health Insurance Coverage:

The trust will provide the international students with the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which enables international students to access the UK’s National Health Service. 


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TO APPLY FOR RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible to apply to the Rhodes scholarships offered for international students to study a postgraduate course at University of Oxford, the candidate must pass the following eligibility criteria.

Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of one of the eligible countries participating in the Rhodes scholarship. As the scholarship is offered over 22 designated Rhodes constituencies, it is important to check if you meet the criteria of the Rhodes constituency for which you are applying.

Age: Depending on the constituencies, age limit may vary. For most constituencies the age limit is 19 to 25 years at the time of scholarship application.

Academics: Applicants must complete their bachelor’s degree with sufficiently high standards to get selected for the Rhodes scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. Depending on the constituencies, the academic eligibility requirements may vary. Please refer to the country-specific requirements before you apply for the scholarship.

NOTE: Each constituency has its on country specific eligibility criteria in regards to nationality, age, academic requirements, residency and so on. Before applying to the scholarship, you will need to check the requirements for your constituency or region.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Eligible students who wish to pursue post-graduate study at university of oxford, can apply to Rhodes scholarship online.

  1. Register and create an account on the Rhodes trust website.
  2. Complete the online scholarship application form
  3. Fill in all the required details and submit the required documents.
  4. Submit your scholarship application before deadline.

List of supporting documents for Rhodes Scholarship

Rhodes applicants must prepare the following list of documents to submit along with the application form.

  1. Birth certificate of the applicant
  2. Personal statement not exceeding 100 words
  3. Official academic transcripts from the previous institutions
  4. Letters of recommendation
  5. Valid passport
  6. Latest resume
  7. Latest colour photograph of the candidate
  8. IELTS or TOEFL score

Assessment Process

All the scholarship application forms and supporting documents are evaluated by the Rhodes selection committee and the final applicants are selected mainly through the interviews. The committee will take a decision after the candidate’s final interview. The selected candidates are informed via email.

Rhodes Final Interview

The Rhodes final interview lasts for about 30-45 mins and has great importance in the final selection process. The interview panel is made up of Rhodes scholars, experts in various fields and community leaders, a total of up to six to nine people. The interview is of core importance and will be wide-ranging in nature designated to test candidates’ intellectual skills and reasoning ability. The selection committee also considers the candidates’ character, core commitments and potential to make positive commitments to society.
